We’re sorry, but the registration period for this field day has passed. Please join us at another field day!
Join us to lay the foundation for Spring planting at a traditional communal cornfield on Navajo Nation. This cornfield is a multi-year project that has included lasagna beds and no-till approaches. One challenge the community stewarding this field is facing is major soil erosion during monsoon rains caused by concentrated runoff from a nearby culvert.
At this field day, we will create low-tech rainwater harvesting structures to transform the challenge into an asset, slowing and sinking much-needed water instead of allowing it to erode topsoil. These structures include swales and wicker weirs, which will not only slow erosion and collect sediment, they will also add organic matter to the soil and be inoculated with beneficial microorganisms. In addition, we will refresh no-till lasagna garden beds for planting, complete with beneficial soil microbe inoculation from compost.
Come lend a hand, enjoy a delicious lunch provided, and witness the beautiful landscape where this field is located on the Navajo Nation near El Morro and El Malpais National Monuments.
